Carefree Hosts Susan Alvy Memorial Tournament

January 23, 2017 01:59 PM

Carefree Racquet Club in Merrick hosted the 3rd Annual Susan Alvy Memorial Tournament in December 2016.  Susan was the manager of Rockville Racquet Club for many years as well as a member of the Long Island USTA League Committee.

One of Susan’s favorite events at Rockville Racquet was the Men’s Doubles Holiday Tournament.  She would speak of fondly of how she loved watching the great tennis followed by "schmoozing" with the players afterwards, according to Kathy Miller, manager of Carefree.  "The players loved seeing her there as much as she loved being there!" Kathy said.

Susan lost her battle to cancer in November 2014, not long after Rockville Racquet closed its doors for good.  "Players who had played in the Men's Doubles Holiday Tournament came to me and asked if I would keep it going," Kathy said.  "It was an honor to do so and we all knew it had to have Susan’s name attached.  I am so happy that this tournament continues in Susan’s name."

The tournament consists of Men’s Doubles with an “A” division for 4.5-5.0 players and a “B” division for 3.5-4.0 players.  All players played in a final round on Monday, January 2nd followed by a breakfast and a trophy presentation by Susan’s sister, Judy Weiss.  Each year either Judy or Susan’s daughter, Debbie, have joined Carefree to present the trophies.

This years winners and finalists are:

“A” division winners are Brad Shafran and Jeff Snow.  Finalists are Jon Bonnet & Keith Mattes.

“B” division winners are Chris Wolfe & Shahzeb Mirza.  Finalists are Tomas Kukla & Sammy Tam.
