Girls Inc. of Long Island Uses USTA LI Region Grant for Tennis and Wellness Summer Camp

During the week of July 14, 2014, Girls Inc. of Long Island held a Tennis and Wellness Summer Camp for the second consecutive year at Central Islip High School. The girls who participated in the program are students from Central Islip High School and surrounding communities. Half of the participants play tennis for a team, while the rest learned how to play the sport for the first time at the Camp.

Mornings consisted of two hours of tennis instruction with instructor Kinga Polonska from SportTime and Assistant Coach at Suffolk Community College. That was followed by three hours of Girls Inc.  Programming.  During tennis instruction, the group learned and/or improved upon technique and skills and increased their game immensely. Coach Polonska’s enthusiasm and passion for the sport was contagious and had a great impact on the girls. Not only did the group learn about and enhance their tennis skills, but they also demonstrated a new-found appreciation for team work and discipline.

Additional camp programming focused on college and career readiness, journaling, nutrition and self-esteem activities, as well as meditation and mindfulness. The United States Tennis Association provided Girls Inc. of Long Island with the resources to make a positive impact on the girls through tennis.
