Hewlett Girl Wins National Title

Fifth grader Rachel Arbitman of Hewlett helped her team, the Tornados, win a USTA Gold Ball at the National Spring Team Championships, a new USTA national championship tournament.

Arbitman was one of 256 juniors selected for the tournament, which grouped two players apiece from the 12-, 14-, 16- and 18-year-old age divisions onto 16 boys' and 16 girls' teams. Each team played under a USTA-assigned coach. After two days of practice, each team played four matches consisting of eight singles and four doubles matches in a bracket-style draw, with the Tornados the last team standing in the girls' division after a 7-5 victory over the Firecrackers on Thursday.

Arbitman personally won six of eight matches in the Mobile, Ala., tournament. Her team members came from seven different states.
