Long Island Girls Crowned Champs at States

Long Island girls swept the top honors at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships this past weekend, with Courtney Kowlasky and Celeste Matute of Oyster Bay capturing their second straight doubles title; top-seeded Kseniya Zonova of Hewlett winning the singles crown and Manhasset’s Amanda Foo taking home the sportsmanship award.

On the singles side, Zonova, the Nassau County singles champion, defeated Sydney Kaplan of Suffern in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Kowalsky/Matute, Nassau County’s doubles champs, defeated Laina Campos and Vanessa Ciano of Ursuline 6-3, 6-1.  To see video of the singles and doubles champs, click here.

Long Island girls also swept the third place honors, with Merri Kelly Hannity of Cold Spring Harbor winning in singles and Lei Frankis & Amanda Foo of Manhasset in doubles. 

Also competing at States were:

In singles:  Ashley Lessen, Wheatley,  Kimberly Liao, Commack, Stephanie Chikvashvili, Half Hollow Hills East, and Emily Shutman, Huntington.

In doubles: Danah Han & Mina Sarcevic, Half Hollow Hills West, Lisa Lin & Kaitlin Hibbert, William Floyd, Olivia Faulhaber & Mikayla Goria, Smithtown East, and Samantha Galu & Jiya Singh, Jericho.

The USTA Long Island Region was pleased to provide sweatshirts to the Nassau and Suffolk girls who participated in the championships at the Tri-City Fitness Center in Latham, NY.
