USTA Tri-Level League Bids Fond Farewell to Rockville Racquet

With a total of 11 men’s and women’s teams competing in round robin format, this year’s Tri-Level League needed extra court space. The owners of the closed Rockville Racquet agreed to make the facility available for one last hurrah, allowing the six men’s teams and five women’s teams to to play on the blue, light buzzing courts one last time in October.

The winning teams will represent the Long Island Region at a sectional event over the Martin Luther King weekend in January.

Captain Ian Shapiro led his team to victory by winning all five of their matches. Shapiro’s team members are: 3.5 players--Josh Levin, Ravi Lam, Jemal Creary and Jody Gerber; 4.0 players--Ian Shapiro, Gabe Moreira, Jeff Kee, Dan Derosalia and Vishal Lalchand, and 4.5 players--Wyn Mintz, Allan Rozner, Frank Schiraldi, Andrew Ross and David Block.

The winning women’s team also was undefeated and came down to a nail biter last match with the deciding court being the 3.5 court played by Dayna Coulter and Michele Bergman (3.5) who won 7-6, 7-5. Captained by Debbie Cichon (4.5), the team also includes Linda Sweeney (3.5); Kara Parker, Cindy Gomez, Janine Buss and Monika Malgorzatta Maiellano (4.0), and Jenn Sussman, and Jill Cohen (4.5).
